Expected consequences of the Prohibition

The prohibition on alcohol selling that the Uzbek government has recently passed is bringing its first results. Kamron wrote in his post about the possible results of prohibition. The one that was about the prosperity of the underground manufacturing and selling of alcohol beverages has already come out.

According to the information I got from the trustworthy sources in Tashkent, the ordinary selling of alcohol beverages has shifted to underground level, as there is no chance for most former alcohol drink sellers to get license to legally continue their work, as they do not meet requirements of the new law. Therefore, now they have to work illegally. They are taking certain risk, and it results in the price rise of the alcohol drinks. As underground alcohol business has already become a really profitable enterprise, everyone is doing it, besides former sellers. So if you are in Tashkent and want to get an alcoholic drink, go to almost any seller in the bazaar, let it be a grocery seller, and say to him/her that you need some booze and in couple of minutes you will get it, but of course for a higher price than before.

Of course, these all have resulted in the quality of alcohol beverages. People say that palyonka (handmade vodka) is famous nowadays, because it is cheaper than ordinary vodka. Though, they are not of great quality, which may have really bad consequences, like alcohol poisoning that in many cases has lethal end.

The places that do have licenses have become expensive oasis for those people who can afford it. Greater part of population cannot afford going to such place. Therefore, lots of people are just drinking beer, as beer is not considered to be an alcohol drink in Uzbekistan.
